Nebula Collective Show

The Nebula Collective - Liverpool Community College Graduation Show

imageThe Nebula Collective - Liverpool Community College Fine Art Degree Show
10 -18 June 2009
'The Nebula Collective' Liverpool Community College Fine Art Foundation Degree Show takes place at M-USE (the old Arena Studios building) in Duke Street. Challenging paintings, tactile textiles, Installation and video by students of the Arts Centre are in their first public exhibition.
The Group, who call themselves the Nebula Collective, have been studying Fine Art for two years and the exhibition is intended to be a showcase for their latest work before they embark on a career in Liverpool’s thriving Art scene or go on to complete a BA honours for one year in Fine Art at Hope University.

“Some of us intend to carve out careers as independent artists, while others plan to enter the teaching profession” said the Nebula Collective spokesperson Jodie.

As a group we feel it is more than a course of practical study and art history, more that we have explored making art that is relevant now. Liverpool architecture, urban and rural, social commentary, intervention are just a few of the areas we have dealt with.

For us art is not only about working away in a studio, it is working as a collective to have a real experience of curating our own show from start to finish. As the Nebula Collective, we have organised this exhibition over the last 12 months, from researching possible venues through to the installation. This has given us the opportunity to gain skills in publicity, marketing, fundraising and sponsorship.

I borrow a quote from Shakespeare as final advice to the Nebula group as they graduate - ‘Strive mightily, but eat and drink as friends’, Geoff Molyneux, course leader.

The Art on show is by:
Jodie Mellor

Zahava Wilksberg

Peace Piece

Piece Peace
Dear Yoko, My Mother Was Beautiful Too

Installation and Performance by Kaety Moore March 2009

The Artistic Republic Of Garston & Garston Embassy were created for Liverpool Biennial 2008. An artist created a façade over the Tocky Tech building, the old Wellington Street School. In it was a missile sculpture known locally as the rocket.

It's presence offended me and other pacifists.

I intended to wrap the missile in canvas to honour the work of Yoko Ono and remember the dead and dying in Iraq, Afghanistan, Uganda, Palestine...all the places where hurting was happening. The Biennial took the rocket back before I could carry out my work.

Peace Piece, Dear Yoko, My Mother Was Beautiful Too is my response to the missile and this action.

Accompanying the installation and performance were chalk words musing on Yoko Ono's "Imagine Peace".

My performance took place on Mother's Day 2009. I sat to knit and breastfeed for peace.

The previous day I laid out a tablecloth on the ground to set my rocking chair upon. On this I laid daffodils. I filled a cradle with apples.

I began to knit.

Later I returned with candles and avacados.

I sat.

Over night my rocking chair was stolen.

I returned early Sunday morning and sat on the floor to knit. I spoke with passers-by about my grief, and theirs. For their stories I exchanged daffodils.

Later on I gave out the apples and daffodils and thought about my mother.
